Seminar AS (IT-Sec): Malware, Botnets, and Intrusion Detection

The seminar targets at master-level students interested in IT security and especially network security. In this seminar, several aspects of malware, botnets, and intrusion detection will be discussed.

This is a 5 credit points seminar, meaning at least 150 hours of work. The seminar takes place on thursday from 14:15 to 15:45.

During the seminar each group (consisting of 2 students) is required to hold a 60-70 minutes presentation and deliver a term paper of about 25 pages. Presentation can be given in German or English, term paper shall be written in English. For the term paper, Springer’s lecture notes on computer science formatting shall be used. Term papers will be made available to course participants after the seminar. Students are required to do a good proportion of literature survey. Topics are supposed to be jointly prepared by two students. The timeline is as follows:

  • 24.03.2011: Introduction and assignment of topics

  • 14.04.2011: Each group gives a 5-minute presentation of their literature survey

  • The first topic presentation takes place on 05.05.2011 followed each week by the subsequent presentations.
